Polypropylene (PP) for the SLS 3D printers from Sinterit

Sinterit PP SLS Powder Launch

Sinterit, the manufacturer of affordable, compact SLS 3D printers, recently made polypropylene (PP) SLS powder available for its selective laser sintering 3D printing platform. The new material is the first material for compact SLS 3D printers that is airtight and waterproof without additional treatment. As a result, Sinterit is creating new opportunities for functional prototyping and manufacturing in the automotive industry and beyond.

The PP / polypropylene SLS powder is the latest addition to Sinterit’s constantly growing SLS material portfolio. It is characterized, for example, by its good chemical resistance, low density and low water absorption. In addition, it is both airtight and watertight without the need for special sealing. (Components made of TPE, however, must be immersed in a special liquid (sealer) in order to be waterproof).

3D printed components made from poplypropylene offer new possibilities

The properties of PP SLS powder are used in many industries, but perhaps most commonly in the automotive sector, where polypropylene is widely used. For this reason, Sinterit foresees several specific applications for the material, including functional prototypes for air filter housings, intake manifolds electronic housings and more. Given the standard application of polypropylene and its properties, such a use is obvious.

In addition, manufacturers of plastic parts who already use polypropylene for standard products can also use the new PP SLS powder from Sinterit. This is because Sinterit’s SLS 3D printing platform and the new material make it easy for these manufacturers to create prototypes for new parts or produce a small series for end products. In addition, components made from Sinterit PP SLS powder can be welded to injection-molded parts made from polypropylene. This enables the development of new (hybrid) components with complex geometries.

PP 3D printing for maintenance, pumps and valves

SLS 3D printing is also suitable for the production of polypropylene spare parts in maintenance. Sinterit PP powder can even be used in the manufacture of pumps and valves, as it can withstand the pressure of normal pneumatic systems and is resistant to moisture. In addition, the low density of the powder enables the production of floatable parts.

Research laboratories and universities can also benefit from the advantages of Sinterit polypropylene powder: For example, for the development of adapters, distributors, couplings or sensor housings for pneumatic systems.
