We are pleased to present the new Formlabs Build Platform 2L with the patented Quick Release Technology. This simplifies the release of parts from the build platform for our large-format stereolithography (SLA) 3D printers, the Form 3L and Form 3BL.

Print large SLA components more easily

The Formlabs Build Platform 2L is based on the success of the Build Platform 2 for the Form 3 SLA printers. With comparable functionality, it simplifies the removal of components for the Form 3SL/BL 3D printers. This shortens the post-processing time and optimizes the work process. When developing new products, Formlabs attaches great importance to customer feedback. It therefore became clear fairly quickly that the advantages of the Build Platform 2 in large-format SLA 3D printing would lead to even more significant improvements in the workflow, which immediately led to the development of the Build Platform 2L.

The Formlabs Form 3L and Form 3BL enable the production of large plastic components with high precision and surface quality. The Build Platform 2L reduces previous difficulties in the workflow by shortening the post-processing time. From 1:1 scale anatomical models to industrial molds, the Formlabs Build Platform 2L helps you easily remove large or heavy parts from the build platform.

The stainless steel material of the Build Platform 2L is scratch-resistant and robust. It is therefore significantly more durable than the standard build platform for the Form 3L/3BL – even with daily use. The Quick Release Technology is comparable to the system used for the Build Platform 2 for the Form 3.

Exploiting the full potential

Certain materials were previously very difficult to remove from the building platform with a spatula or scraping tool. The density of the resin makes the adhesion to a normal building platform incredibly strong. This can make removing the parts quite laborious. To avoid the adhesion problem, the parts are often printed at an angle – although this would not be necessary in terms of geometry. This is because the raft and the support structures are easier to remove than parts that have been printed directly onto the building platform. Less skill is required to remove the raft, and damage to the support structures is not a problem.

3D printing injection molds

Printing injection molds with Rigid 10K used to be very challenging. They had to be printed at an angle, which increased the printing time and material consumption. Depending on the size of the part, it was also simply impossible to print the mold at all. An additional problem with molds intended for an industrial molding machine is that the material properties must be completely uniform across the entire part. There must be no deviations in density or strength. For very large molds or molds printed at an angle, this has not been a reliable process until now.

With the Quick Release Technology of the 2L building platform, it is now possible to print large injection molds made of Rigid 10K Resin directly onto the building platform without supports. This gives the molds a completely uniform density and strength. They can be easily and cleanly removed from the building platform and can be used in an industrial injection molding process.

With 3D printed molds, companies can manufacture products in small quantities without spending the high cost of a tool. For new products that may require design adjustments, a cost-effective production method reduces the need for iterations. With the Formlabs Form 3L and Build Platform 2L, you can now confidently produce injection molded parts in quantities of tens or hundreds easily and affordably.

The advantages of printing directly onto the Build Platform 2L are the shorter overall printing time and better material utilization.
