Formlabs launched its first biocompatible resin less than a year ago. Since then, dentists and dental technicians around the world have used it to produce more than 10,000 surgical guides, enabling them to achieve better clinical results and perform procedures more quickly.

Formlabs recently announced a new partnership with 3Shape, the market leader in 3D scanning and CAD/CAM software for dental practices and laboratories. This partnership has resulted in Formlabs’ software integration with 3Shape to optimize the workflow from CAD model to 3D print.

Formlabs and 3Shape now offer the first complete digital solution for dental professionals. This optimizes the workflow from the design of a surgical guide to its production via 3D printing. This makes it easier and cheaper than ever before to produce surgical guides yourself.

From patient scan to drilling template in just a few hours

With the Formlabs-3Shape integration, dental technicians can create surgical guides by taking a scan with the 3Shape TRIOS intraoral scanner. The design is then completed in the 3Shape Implant Studio software. Print preparation is now as easy as in the Formlabs software PreForm; with just a few mouse clicks and a few hours later your surgical guides are made from biocompatible Dental SG Resin. While fabrication used to take weeks, the Formlabs-3Shape integration enables a cost-effective chairside 3D printing workflow. This even makes it possible to perform a guided procedure on the same day.

The integration in 3Shape Implant Studio supports, among other things

  • Automatic detection of dental indications
  • Automatic orientation and support structure generation
  • Automatic placement on the construction panel
  • A map of the objects on the building platform for patient identification

Further integrations via the 3Shapes Dental Software Suite, including Dental System and Orthodontic System, are in development and will be published in the course of the year. This will create further possibilities in the future, such as the production of restorative models, night braces/occlusal splints and dentures.

“The integration of Form 2 with 3Shape’s leading products enables dental CAD/CAM workflows to be optimized to the point where chairside 3D printing becomes a reality,” says Gideon Balloch, Dental Product Manager at Formlabs. “3Shape and Formlabs share a commitment to pioneering powerful, seamless and accessible technologies. We are excited to continue pushing the boundaries of digital dentistry together.”
