Formlabs Tough 1500 Resin now available

Formlabs Tough Resin synthetic resin

We are pleased to announce that the Formlabs Tough 1500 Resin is now available. The Tough 1500 Resin is the latest addition to the Formlabs resin library for the Formlabs Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printers, including the Form 3, Form 3L and Form 2.

Tough 1500 Resin can be used to produce stiff and flexible parts that bend and spring back quickly under cyclic loading. This material is ideal for functional prototypes, fixtures and connectors that are temporarily bent. It also simulates polypropylene parts in terms of stiffness and strength.

Formlabs Tough 1500 Resin is the most resistant material in the Formlabs Engineering Resin family. The Tough Resin, Tough 1500 Resin and Durable Resin resins behave relatively similarly under an applied force. However, these materials can be clearly differentiated by comparing key properties such as stiffness and elongation.

What is the Tough 1500 Resin suitable for?

Formlabs Tough 1500 Resin is ideal for prototypes and fasteners that need to bend but also spring back to their original shape quickly. Some typical examples of this are springs, snap-fit connections and press fits and hinges.

Tough 1500 Resin is therefore also suitable for devices that are repeatedly bent or subjected to impacts. The balance of stiffness, strength and impact resistance makes this resin perfect for many manufacturing environments.

Polypropylene (PP) is a common thermoplastic used in numerous products in the consumer goods industry. Use Tough 1500 Resin to simulate the strength and stiffness of products to be made from polypropylene.

Key technical data of the Formlabs Tough 1500 Resin

In order to assess materials and use them correctly, it is important to understand their technical properties. For this reason, we will briefly highlight the key technical data of Tough 1500 Resin here. The elongation and tensile modulus of Tough 1500 Resin are very well balanced, giving the material high resistance and fast springback.

The value for elongation is an indicator of how much a material can be stretched or bent. The size of the tensile modulus, on the other hand, indicates how stiff a material is or how easily a material can be stretched or bent.

Components made from Tough 1500 can therefore be bent considerably. On the other hand, they quickly return to their original shape.

Maximum tensile strength
Tensile modulus Elongation at break Flexural modulus Izod impact strength
33 MPa 1500 MPa 51 % 1400 MPa 67 J/m

The components used to collect this data were produced using a Formlabs Form 2 3D printer with a layer thickness of 100 µm and post-cured with a Form Cure for 60 minutes at 70 °C.

The number “1500” in the name of Formlabs Tough 1500 Resin stands for its tensile modulus (in MPa). As part of the further and new development of technical synthetic resins, Formlabs will use “adjective + number” for naming in future. For the Tough and Durable resins, the tensile modulus will be used as a number and the most important distinguishing feature. This will make it easier for you to differentiate between the materials and classify them in terms of their stiffness.

Discover the Formlabs Tough 1500 Resin

Tough 1500 Resin is characterized by a particularly balanced ratio of rigidity and flexibility. Accordingly, components made from this material can be deformed and quickly returned to shape. See for yourself by requesting a test print of a spring system made of Tough 1500 Resin.

This assembly is shipped in three easy-to-assemble parts. One of these parts is supplied with support structures. This allows you to experience for yourself how easy it is to remove supports from parts printed on the Form 3. After you have assembled the assembly, compress the spring repeatedly to experience the high resistance of Tough 1500 Resin.
