MakerBot opened its new 16,000 square meter factory in Industry City<\/a><\/span>Brooklyn, NY. This ensures that “Made in Brooklyn” will continue to be printed on the back of the MakerBot 3D printers<\/a><\/span> printers in the future. <\/p>\n

“We’re proud to be here in Brooklyn, not just as a service provider, designer and in marketing, but also in manufacturing,” said J. Jaglom, CEO of MakerBot, who spoke to more than 100 workers, teachers, students and government officials. He could hardly contain his excitement about MakerBot revitalizing a manufacturing site in Brooklyn. <\/p>\n

Diana Pincus, MakerBot’s Vice President of Operations, who joined MakerBot three years ago, oversaw the creation of the new factory, which simplifies production and doubles capacity compared to the previous facility. The new factory is based on the principles of lean manufacturing, which emphasizes waste reduction and efficiency. “Lean is a culture, not an activity, so we are on a journey to make the MakerBot factory a world-class manufacturing facility,” said Pincus. Pincus and MakerBot are in a unique position. Or as she puts it, “I feel very fortunate to have built a factory not only in the U.S., but in Brooklyn, my home.” <\/p>\n

Other speakers at the opening included Randy Asher, principal of the Brooklyn Technical High School<\/a><\/span>Dan Freedman, Dean of the School of Science and Engineering at the State University of New York at New Paltz<\/a><\/span>and Ryan Grepper, the inventor of“Coolest<\/span>“<\/a>, a new type of cooler that raised $13.2 million on Kickstarter<\/a><\/span> currently the highest amount ever raised in a crowdfunding campaign.<\/p>\n

Grepper also spoke about how he created the prototypes for his cooler with his MakerBot Replicator and how 3D printing technology enabled him to test and develop his ideas. “We live in an exciting time where anyone with the will to learn has access to such a powerful tool,” he said. Freedman, who built the first MakerBot Innovation Center in New Paltz, agreed, calling 3D printers “the Swiss Army knife of fabrication technologies. <\/p>\n

Guided by members of the operations management team, the visitors then took a tour of the new factory.<\/p>\n
